Message on the occasion of the 2014 National March for Life

On the occasion of the National March for Life, the Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF) invites us to reflect on the fact that for decades, abortion “rights” proponents have fed Canadians the lie that access to abortion is good for women.

It is said that a lie, repeated loudly and with sufficient frequency, will come to be believed. So many Canadians have believed the abortion lie that, consequently and tragically, every year in our country roughly one quarter of all children conceived are intentionally destroyed in the womb. A disproportionate number of these are, in fact, female. These are the first female victims of abortion. The women who submit to abortion constitute the second victims: many will silently suffer physical, psychological and spiritual injuries that will
plague them for the remainder of their lives. Any reference to their suffering remains taboo.

In so many ways, abortion, far from advancing the welfare of females, represents a grave threat to their welfare and to the welfare of society at large. Surely, we are justified in asking why so many in our society continue to believe the abortion lie, how so many are able to ignore the truth that abortion hurts women.

Who does benefit?

In order to answer this question, we need to first ask ourselves who DOES benefit from abortion. In December of 2013, the Canadian Medical Association Journal made it known that a pharmaceutical company had applied to Health Canada for license to introduce the chemical abortion drug, RU-486, also known as mifepristone. This is the very same drug which was effectively banned for use in Canada in 2001 after a woman died from septic shock during initial drug trials. In 2011 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
reported that no fewer than fourteen women had died in that country after taking RU-486. The same 2011 US report documented a total of 2,207 adverse effects resulting from the use of RU-486.

The fact that we are once more confronted with the possibility that RU-486 will be introduced in Canada underscores an undeniable fact: that the abortion lie continues to be nurtured by interests which stand to gain financially from its perpetuation.

When will enough be enough? How many women need to die, to be maimed, or to find themselves haunted by the ill-informed decisions of their youth – how many unborn children must die—before the abortion lie is revealed for what it is? To that end we must unite our voices and our actions in proclaiming the inherent dignity and value of every human life from the first moment of conception to natural death. RU4 Life?

Join the chorus at the National March for Life in Ottawa or at a provincial march near you this May 8th.
