Have you heard the news? The good news, that is. Too often today, the news we hear is not so good or not so true. The Church, however, proclaims the Good News. She announces to all who are willing to listen that Jesus is the good news; he is God the Father’s loving Word of salvation. This news is not only good, but it is also true because Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (Jn 14:6). The word we use to describe this good news is “Gospel” and because it is God’s saving message, it has the power to transform our lives through the work of his Holy Spirit.

As Catholics, we are privileged to listen to the Gospel every week in church during Sunday mass. The Christian family is also a little church, the “domestic church” as the Fathers of Vatican II put it (Lumen Gentium, 11). Not only are we able to listen to the Gospel weekly in church, but we can also listen to the Gospel as a family any time during the week as a domestic church. In this way we can be nourished by God’s loving word, a word that can build us up in faith, hope, and love. Making time to listen to the Gospel as a family helps us to recognize the loving presence of God in our lives. Listening to the Gospel as a family is an act of worship and love of God; simply put, it is praying together as a family.

During this week, when the Church in Canada celebrates life and the family, let us cultivate the good habit of listening to the Gospel as a family. In this way, our families can be transformed by the love of God so that we too can become good news to the world!
